It's actually taking some of the tenets of what we knew from minimalism - lighter weight, better materials, better construction - and putting them into a shoe that certainly gives you more cushion but allows you to have you foot move naturally as it might in a minimalist shoe.ĬORNISH: But what are supposed to be the added benefits then of having this extra padding, I assume, in the sole of the shoe? I don't know if we are actually talking about something that looks like a basketball shoe. Surprisingly, though, it's not entirely more is more. And they took the opposite approach of having shoes with more cushioning between a runner's foot and the ground. It was started with a brand called Hoka - Hoka One One is the full name. I think that, you know, the rise of what we call maximalist shoes has come on in the last couple of years. What can you tell us about the newer trend? There hasn't been any science that has shown this is true specifically to what their claims were, so I think that's where the trouble is.ĬORNISH: But at the same time, I've read that sales of minimalist shoes have essentially been declining, right, and that runners are, it seems like, moving into the exact opposite direction. METZLER: You know, I think that the challenge here is that certainly there's various runners who will say that they've gotten stronger or adapted well to these kind of shoes, and other brands have worked on them as well. At this point, do we know now that that's definitely not the case? And the company, as well as runners, said that they decreased the risk of knee and ankle injuries. Thanks for having me.ĬORNISH: So, Vibram's FiveFingers shoes essentially kind of launched this minimalist trend, right, almost 10 years ago. Brian, welcome to the program.īRIAN METZLER: Thank you. He is editor-in-chief of Competitor magazine, which specializes in running and endurance sports. To talk about this and the current trends, we turn to Brian Metzler. Well, now, Vibram has settled a class-action lawsuit for more than $3.5 million and it's agreed to stop making those health claims. In its marketing, the company claimed they could prevent injuries better than traditional running shoes. Vibram's FiveFingers shoes have been among the most popular. You know the ones - they look like gloves for your feet. However, as I wear them more and more, I adapt my walking style and I think it is getting better fast.Minimalist shoes have been a big trend in recent years among runners. Now I simply want to wear them all the time and I am wondering if I can be so brave as to get myself a pair of Fivefingers in black to wear to the office… Walking in Fivefingers is a slightly awkward affair at the beginning because I am used to coming hard with my heel to the floor in soft shoes. I always had the right set of the foot and never hit the road with the heel, so these shoes feel so right, so proper. Of course, I have to watch out not to step on very sharp stones and other obstacles that I never noticed before. They are extremely comfortable and pleasant to run in. They were comfortable right from the beginning but when I started running in them… How should I put it to you? You see, for the first time in my life, I am actually looking forward to my jogging time now. Now, I am finally a proud owner of a Fivefingers Komodo Sport (I think, I threw away the papers and the box). Still, the years passed by and I did not seem to ever had the time, money, and courage to take them on. I wanted to try the Vibram Fivefingers shoes for a long time, not in the least thanks to my friend Wouter, who wears them even to official presentations. Tagged addictive, comfortable, compare, en, fivefingers, healthy, lawsuit, natural, running, settlement, shoes, vibram, walk right, walking Vibram FiveFingers I am afraid to recommend them because you will get addicted if you bother to learn how to walk right :) So I feel sorry that they got slapped with that court case. Anything else is just clumsy and uncomfortable. Once you wear the FiveFingers shoes and learn to walk properly, there is no turning back. On the other hand, after my experience with FiveFingers shoes, owning three pairs of them and walking them every day wherever I go, I have to say that for me those claims are true. I heard that Vibram has settled a class action lawsuit that “alleged the company made false and unsubstantiated claims about the health benefits of its glove-like footwear.” That was apparently back in May and I was too busy with my brand new FiveFingers Komodo Sport to pay attention, apparently.įrankly, the company should not have said the FiveFingers bring definite improvement to the health if they did not have any evidence to back that up.
